Prepping the Ground Before Laying Turf

One of the key factors in turfing any area, large or small, is preparing the ground first and it’s something our expert team is very good at. If we’re taking up paving stones, for example, we also need to remove the sand and hardcore below and replace that with fresh soil.

The general steps in preparing your garden include:

  • Clearing the area, including getting rid of weeds and roots and taking up an old, tired lawn.
  • It’s a good idea to dig down about 6 inches and create a fresh base for the new lawn. This helps get rid of rocks and other debris.
  • Once this is done, we can work to improve the underlying soil and create a level space that is fresh and ready for laying down the turf. This will depend on what type of soil or ground we’re playing with and it is where our local expertise comes into play.
  • We’ll then usually add a pre-turfing feed which enables the grass to take root more quickly and should ensure a healthy knit.
  • Your new turf generally needs at least 3 weeks to bed in and grow its roots, so you shouldn’t be cutting it before this. Our expert team will give you all the advice you need to get over that initial period.
